How much you enjoy your yoga practice depends largely on your yoga mat: you can only relax and really find yourself on it if the mat suits you and the style of yoga you practice. Here we present 7 factors that you should pay attention to when choosing. Our list will be particularly helpful if you are just starting out in yoga or if you want to try out new yoga styles.
Factor #1 when choosing your yoga mat: Your practice
Do you practice Hatha, calm Yin Yoga, flowing Vinyasa or even sweaty Hot or Ashtanga Yoga? Each yoga style has different requirements for the surface of your mat. Open-pored, rough surfaces objectively offer the best slip resistance. However, if your practice requires less grip, for example for restorative exercises, a yoga mat with a closed-pore surface is more suitable.
In addition to your yoga style, your experience also influences the choice of the right mat: the longer you practice, the clearer it will become to you which texture is most important to you personally in your yoga practice.
Our tip for beginners:
In our product descriptions you will find information about which yoga style the mat is particularly suitable for. If you put a lot of strain on your yoga mat through your practice or are a beginner, then natural rubber mats are probably not suitable for you. However, they are often the first choice for advanced yogis who value perfect slip resistance.
Factor #2 when choosing your yoga mat: The right format
Yoga mats come in different sizes, weights and thicknesses. If you are looking for a mat for on the go, it makes sense to choose a lighter model. If you practice more at home, the mat can also be heavier and thus offer you more comfort.
Remember: The thicker your yoga mat is, the more padding it offers you. In addition to the thickness of the mat, you should also consider the length and width when making your purchase decision.
Our tip:
The ideal yoga mat is about two hand widths longer than you: if you lie down on it, you have a hand width of space above your head and another hand width under your feet. To put it more simply, it is at least 10 cm longer than you. The lengths of standard mats are between 173 and 185 cm. Extra lengths are available from 188 to 215 cm. The standard width is about 61 cm. Depending on your body type or personal preference, you can choose a wider mat.
Factor #3 when choosing your yoga mat: The material
The material of your yoga mat should suit your needs.
• Do you prefer something robust and easy to care for or is a mat made of natural materials more important to you?
• Is slip resistance your top priority?
• Do you have to ensure good allergy tolerance?
• Do you want a particularly soft mat for quiet yoga exercises?
Whatever you expect from your yoga mat, every material has advantages and disadvantages. It is therefore important to weigh up your priorities.
Our tip:
We recommend natural rubber mats for environmentally conscious yogis and calm yoga styles. For more active yoga styles and workouts, Oeko-Tex certified PVC mats are recommended. If you don't want to commit to one, we have mats made from a mix of materials in our range. These are usually natural rubber mats with synthetic additives. They combine the positive properties of natural rubber mats and PVC mats: They offer you good slip resistance and optimal durability.
Factor #4 when choosing your yoga mat: The manufacturing
Where does the yoga mat actually come from? If, like us, you value sustainable production under fair conditions, you will find what you are looking for with us.
Did you know that most yoga mats available on the market are mass-produced in Asia? If you are looking for a high-quality mat that is produced using resources efficiently and has a low ecological footprint, it is best to choose a yoga mat that is manufactured in Germany or the EU.

Factor #5 when choosing your yoga mat: Sustainability
Is the yoga mat free of harmful substances such as hormone-damaging phthalates, toxic adhesives or solvents that can release harmful gases? Our first choice is yoga mats with the Oeko-Text Standard 100 seal. They are made of natural materials such as rubber and contain no nasty surprises.
The use of recyclable or already recycled raw materials is another crucial aspect for resource-saving production of your yoga mat.
The longevity of a mat also determines whether it ends up in the trash or not: mats with a short lifespan are quickly disposed of… Other mats last for years!

Frequently asked questions
How do you recognize a good yoga mat?
A good yoga mat generally meets the following four requirements: high slip resistance, free from toxins, good durability and sufficient cushioning.
If you have ever practiced on a cheap no-name yoga mat, you may be familiar with the infamous chewing gum effect: In certain positions, the mat stretches on the floor and throws you off balance. This increases the risk of injury during your practice.
In high-quality mats, a sophisticated multi-layer system prevents this effect. In the middle of the mat, a stabilizing net - usually made of polyester or cotton - holds the various rubber layers of the mat firmly together.
Bad yoga mats also do not sit firmly on the floor and slip when you move; this will not happen with a good yoga mat, because high-quality materials and appropriate processing ensure a high material density and secure grip on the floor.
Various product tests have found toxic dyes, plasticizers and nitrosamines in yoga mats, some of which can be carcinogenic. When buying your yoga mat, look for the Oeko-Tex seal and choose manufacturers who are transparent about their manufacturing processes and materials.
Which yoga mat is the test winner?
Important to note: There is no such thing as THE best yoga mat. Instead, it depends largely on your personal needs as to which yoga mat is best for you.
Nevertheless, numerous tests regularly select their test winner. You should be aware that the test methods often differ or only certain areas, such as the pollutant concentration of the yoga mats, are tested.
The Jade Harmony yoga mat from Jade Yoga was named yoga mat test winner in 2023 by Stiftung Warentest in terms of comfort, stability and slip resistance and is one of the most popular yoga mats on the market.
Our personal test winner: The B Mat Everyday by b halfmoon. This yoga mat impresses us with its non-slip properties, stability and durability. Unlike the Jade Harmony, the B Mat is OEKO-TEX certified and is produced in Spain.
Which yoga mat has the best grip?
PVC yoga mats are generally less slip-resistant than natural rubber mats and become slightly slippery when in contact with moisture or sweat. Roughened and open-pored natural rubber surfaces or mats with PU coatings have the most grip, regardless of the condition of your palms.
How do I clean and care for my yoga mat?
Your yoga mat needs care so that you can enjoy it for a long time. We have summarized the following dos and don'ts for you:
• If necessary, you can wipe your yoga mat with water that is damp but never wet.
• PVC and TPE mats should never be put in the washing machine or in the bathtub. We also advise against doing this with natural rubber mats, as the mats absorb water and are difficult to dry again.
• The best way to clean PVC and TPE mats is with a suitable mat spray or with a mix of a few drops of mild detergent and water. You can also use highly diluted disinfectant on your plastic mat.
• Natural rubber mats must never be cleaned with oily or soapy substances, as these can significantly impair their slip resistance. Use a suitable mat spray or a lemon water mixture
• Allow all mats to dry thoroughly after cleaning – ideally hanging. Never roll them up when they are wet.
• Last tip: Do not dry your mat in the sun.
Are cork yoga mats recommended?
Sustainable and environmentally friendly mats made of cork are the perfect choice for yoga enthusiasts who value quality and sustainability. Cork is a renewable raw material that is obtained from the bark of the cork oak. Therefore, no trees have to be felled in the production of your yoga mat. The special texture and the cushioning properties of cork ensure a non-slip surface and at the same time offer pleasant cushioning for your joints and spine. The surface develops its slip resistance when damp or wet. Yoga mats made of cork are hypoallergenic, antimicrobial and easy to clean.
With their durability and natural aesthetics, they are a good investment in your mindful yoga practice. Another advantage: natural cork is completely biodegradable and therefore very easy to recycle.
The undersides of our cork mats are made of natural rubber. Natural rubber is a renewable raw material from the latex of the rubber tree and is therefore also of natural origin.
Cork mats are suitable for sweaty yoga styles or yoga styles where the non-slip properties of the mat are less important.
When is a yoga mat made of virgin wool recommended?
A sustainable and cozy alternative: yoga mats made of virgin wool. The wool from the shearing of live domestic sheep has been used for hundreds of years due to its special properties. These include its breathability and its ability to clean itself and regulate temperature. It is also sweat-resistant because it can absorb a lot of water without getting damp. In yoga, the rule of "Ahimsa" - no violence - is very important. That is why it is important to ensure that virgin wool comes from the live shearing of sheep from controlled organic livestock farming. No living creature should have to suffer for humans: live and let live, both in everyday life and on the yoga mat, that is the motto.
Although yoga mats made of virgin wool are particularly sweat-resistant, they are more suitable for calmer yoga styles that are practiced lying down, sitting or statically. This is mainly because the mats are not slip-resistant. The well-padded mat supports the joints when sitting for long periods and is pleasantly soft. To ensure that the mat does not slip during the asana, most of the undersides are coated with natural latex or natural rubber.
Our tip:
If the mat is to be used primarily for static Hatha or Kundalini Yoga or for meditation, there is hardly a more comfortable alternative.
Which yoga mat is recommended for people with a latex allergy?
If you are allergic to latex, we recommend a yoga mat made of PVC. Natural rubber is not a suitable material for allergy sufferers. Although natural rubber yoga mats are 99% latex-free, minimal traces of latex proteins may be present.
