Do you already have a mala that accompanies you in your meditation or mantras? Or are you wondering: What exactly is a mala? What makes a mala so special? Then you've come to the right place! Because today we're talking about a pearl necklace that's much more than just a piece of jewelry!
Prayer beads or jewelry or both?
A mala is a necklace made of 108 beads and a guru bead or mala coin. It accompanies you during your prayer, mantra, or meditation, allowing you to drift into absolute stillness. A mala is not only a piece of jewelry but also a symbol of compassion. It is often used not only for prayer or meditation but can also be worn as a fashion accessory. And rightly so, because malas are beautiful to look at, and each one is a true work of art composed of concentrated energy!
A chain with millennia-old sacred tradition
Mala means "sacred garland" in Sanskrit! 108 beads made of precious stones or seeds are strung together to form a chain, with the guru bead or coin completing the mala. 108 is a sacred number in Buddhism and Hinduism. The teachings and views of Buddha were recorded in 108 volumes of the Kanjur, and many Buddhist prayer temples are built on 108 pillars. The number 108 also plays an important role in Hinduism, where there are a total of 108 gods, and the individual beads of a Hindu mala represent each god. The mala can be divided into four sections, each with 27 beads. These four sections represent a transformation of 27 passions into 27 levels of the mind, and of 27 defilements of the heart into 27 enlightened attributes. The so-called guru bead, or mala coin, is both the symbol of the beginning and the end, thus making the mala infinite! You should always begin your prayers and mantras here and never continue beyond the guru bead. Once you reach the guru bead again, simply turn it over and start again! Repeat your prayer or mantra rounds until you feel recharged, refreshed, and full of happiness.
6 questions and answers about your very own sacred mala
1. How do I use my mala correctly?
- Sit in your preferred meditation position
- Hold your mala preferably in your right hand and place the lower end in your left hand. Make sure the mala is not touching the ground, as otherwise the energies from your mala can discharge.
- So in this position, you can begin. Simply begin with your short prayer or mantra and consciously hold the first bead after the guru bead in your fingers. With each new prayer or mantra, you will move to a new bead until you have touched all 108 beads and can start again if you wish.
2. How does my mala support me?
We all know the feeling of counting sheep when we can't fall asleep because our heads are full of thoughts. It's similar with the mala and meditation – sometimes we just can't easily find our inner self, our center, and free ourselves from all external influences. Then simply let your mala glide through your hands, bead by bead, and recite your mantra or prayer. You'll see that with every mantra or prayer you say out loud or in your mind, and with every bead you touch, you become more and more detached from external influences, more and more present in yourself, focus your thoughts, and fill your mala with pure, fresh energy.
3. When is the best time to meditate with my mala?
There are many ways you can use a mala in meditation, and none of them is right or wrong. Just try out different ways and find one that feels right for you. Because that's what matters. Our approach to mala use is: If it feels good to you, then it's good!
4. How long should I meditate with the mala?
You can circle the mala with your fingers as often as you like and as often as feels good. Perhaps until you have internalized your mantra, or simply found inner peace, happiness, and appreciation, or whatever you are currently longing for.
5. How do I properly care for my mala and how do I store it?
After meditating with your mala, place it in a small cloth bag or a beautiful silk or cotton cloth. Always handle your mala with care so that your energies remain contained within it. You can also gently clean it with a cloth as needed. This will ensure its soul-healing effects continue to be felt for a long time.
6. Can I wear my mala at any time?
Wear your mala whenever you like. It can be worn around your neck or on your wrist. Place the guru bead on the back of your neck so it can best radiate its energy. It is also beautiful and effective worn around your wrist. You should remove the mala before sleeping, as it is subjected to excessive wear and tear during sleep. A mala also makes a wonderful gift for people we care about and value deeply.
