Everything about Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini Yoga, often referred to as the yoga of consciousness, is a transformative yoga practice that addresses the body, mind and soul in a holistic approach. You can expect a nice mix of static and dynamic exercises, lots of pranayama and meditation, with the goal of awakening and rising the dormant energy in the body, known as Kundalini.

Kundalini in class

Kundalini yoga is dynamic and varied and can also be very strenuous due to its circular, jumping or rocking movements. In class you can expect asanas, breathing techniques and meditations that aim to get the energy in the body moving. Chanting mantras serves to support spiritual growth and to create a deeper connection to the inner essence. In this way, Kundalini energy, which rests in the base of the spine, is activated and directed upwards through the body's energy centers (chakras). While many yoga styles focus on physical alignment and posture, Kundalini yoga emphasizes the inner experience and the awakening of consciousness. In order to have a positive effect on the energy field, Kundalini traditionally wears white clothing and a turban; however, this tradition is rarely found in local yoga studios and is certainly not compulsory.

Origin and meaning

In Sanskrit, the term Kundalini symbolizes a sleeping snake, which metaphorically represents the energy slumbering within a person. According to this philosophy, this energy is concentrated in various centers along the spine, the so-called chakras. Kundalini Yoga is intended to awaken the snake and activate the individual chakras from bottom to top. The origin of Kundalini Yoga can be traced back to ancient Indian texts and teachings. However, the practice was brought to the West by Yogi Bhajan. Yogi Bhajan founded the 3HO movement, which promoted Kundalini Yoga as a tool for improving the quality of life and for spiritual development.

Who is Kundalini Yoga suitable for?

If you enjoy Hatha Yoga and have no qualms about doing loud breathing exercises or chanting a mantra, you should try Kundalini Yoga. The spiritual side can come into play more or less depending on the teacher. Kundalini Yoga can have a transformative effect on those who are looking for a deeper understanding of themselves and is therefore suitable for people who are looking for a deep spiritual experience and who are ready to embark on the inner journey.

The right Kundalini Yoga equipment

Yoga mat: Since Kundalini is very versatile, you should choose a mat that meets different needs. For long periods of sitting and meditation, good padding is recommended; when practicing dynamic asanas, you will especially appreciate a non-slip mat.

Outfit: The most important thing for Kundalini Yoga is to be comfortable! The mix of meditation and physical exercises requires a well-fitting outfit, which can be quickly supplemented with a warm jacket or sweater if necessary.

Accessories: In Kundalini Yoga, meditations are often accompanied by the sounds of a singing bowl; meditation cushions make it easier to sit for long periods, for example during breathing exercises.
